All that God is, he is without boundaries or limits. Every attribute of God – his goodness, righteousness, graciousness, mercy, patience, love, power, faithfulness, kindness – are all infinite and beyond measure. Every one of God’s ways, we will never fully grasp or understand.
A.W. Tozer points out how we might talk about unlimited wealth, but there is no such thing. You can still count wealth.
We might talk about boundless energy – which you may feel that is something you don’t have! – but there is no such thing as boundless energy. You can measure a person’s energy. And even energetic people have limits. They get tired and worn out.
We might say that an artist takes infinite pains with their artwork. But in reality, they just finish their work of art the best they can. Even if it takes them a very long time to finish, they finally say, “Well, it isn’t perfect, but I’ll have to let it go.”
Do you sometimes wonder if we are really misusing the words “unlimited,” “boundless,” “infinite”? Because these words describe God, and they don’t describe anything but God!
Here are some examples:
God’s greatness is “unsearchable” (Psalm 145:3).
God as sovereign is “Most High” (Daniel 4:17).
God pardons “freely” (Isaiah 55:7).
God gives life “to the full” (John 10:10).
God’s judgments are “unsearchable” (Romans 8:33).
God’s gift of salvation is “indescribable” (2 Corinthians 9:15).
Christ’s riches are “boundless” (Ephesians 3:8).
God’s love “surpasses knowledge” (Ephesians 3:19).
God is able to do “immeasurably more” (Ephesians 3:20).
Jesus is exalted to the “highest place,” his name is “above every name” (Philippians 2:9).
God’s peace “transcends all understanding” (Philippians 4:7).
In the English language, we call these “superlatives.” Superlatives describe something of the highest possible excellence – of the highest order, quality, or degree – surpassing or superior to all others.
These superlatives describe God, and they don’t describe anything but God!
Our prayer response: “Lord, your greatness extends beyond the limitations of my human ability to comprehend! You are unlimited, boundless, infinite! And you are greatly to be praised!”
This is the list of 11 superlatives of God I came up with. Can you add to this list?
